Description

Byline: Laura Porter At the crest of Crown Hill, bracketed by Irving and Newbury streets, 19th century homes cluster together on narrow, tree-lined lanes. It takes little imagination to hear the rattle of carriage wheels that must once have graced Worcester's oldest neighborhood. Close to 40 years ago, the area's 20th century residents founded the Crown Hill Neighborhood Association to help to define the community. Today, the association remains in full force, meeting regularly and continuing the tradition of summer get-togethers and annual mid-December caroling. Occasional home and garden tours reach out to the broader community and raise funds, making it possible to plant trees and support organizations such as the Pleasant Street Neighborhood Center and Abby's House. Neighbors continue to maintain two pocket parks, one named in memory of longtime residents John and Frannie Herron. Currently, efforts are under way to become a local historic district.
